Chapter 1

Once upon a time, there was a cane toad called Max. He wanted to escape because he was in a zoo. But he wasn't the only one. There were lots of cane toads and they all had different ideas of how to get over the wire fence. Every idea was good but, however much they tried, they couldn't get over the fence.

One day, Max woke up. He had an idea. They could make wings! He got twenty big leaves. Then he got some jungle vines. He made some holes in the leaves. Then he tied a big knot through the leaves. Then he woke everyone up and told them the good news. When everyone was awake, they tried it and it worked! Max was so happy. He made more wings.

"Oops," he said, "I'll keep these for spares." He put them in a bag with the rest of the wings. Then everyone was in take off position. Then they took off! The flight out of the zoo was very long and tiring. When they had reached the end of the zoo and it was time to touch down, Max said,

"Finally! That was the first flight I have ever been on and I didn't like it one little bit!"

But they still had a long way to go. Max knew where they should go. It was called the Amazon. When they were getting close, they saw trees that were so tall they blocked out the sunlight.
