The September holidays saw me take up June's kind offer to stay with her at her property at Numbugga (!) near Bega. Barbara and I set off and enjoyed the first part of our trip. About ten kilometres out of Bairnsdale, I was aware that Barbara was about to say something. Suddenly, a flash of white shot past the car with an accompanying "bang". After a few moments, we realised that a car travelling in the opposite direction had veered over to our side of the road and passed us close enough to break off the driver's side mirror! As we arrived in Bairnsdale, we heard the sirens of ambulances and fire-engines. We learned later that the car that had so narrowly missed a major accident with us had caused just that with another car shortly after. Because it all happened so quickly, it took quite a while for the reality to set in. By the time we reached our accommodation in Lakes Entrance, we were feeling quite shaken. How lucky we were to be safe! It made us ponder upon the frailty and uncertainty of our lives, even in these times of advanced medical knowledge.
